Growing production, rising compressed air consumption: when is it time to look ahead?

August 10, 2026

When compressed air consumption at W. van der Meer increased significantly, gaining insight became essential to enable further growth. A story about monitoring, thinking ahead, and working together to find the right solution.

What started with maintenance grew into a broader partnership

At many companies, a compressed air system runs for years without any issues. That is, until production processes change, machines are added, or the demand for capacity increases. At that point, it becomes important to gain insight into system performance in a timely manner.

That was the situation at W. van der Meer. The partnership with Integron began with regular maintenance of a compressor installation. During inspections it became clear that the operating hours of the compressors were increasing sharply. Where previously one compressor formed the base and other units were used during peak moments or as backups, all three compressors were eventually running continuously. Compressed air consumption had risen by approximately 300%.

Growing without the risk of production downtime

An increasing demand for compressed air does not have to be a problem, but it is an important signal. When systems are constantly running at maximum capacity, the risk of disruptions increases and there is little room left for further growth.

Together with W. van der Meer, we investigated the steps needed to ensure the continuity of the production process. A phased approach was chosen. First, a temporary rental compressor was installed to ensure sufficient capacity remained available. In addition, it was decided to install a Sigma Air Manager (SAM) to gain better insight into actual compressed air consumption.

To measure is to know

Many companies know how many compressors they have, but have less insight into how the system is actually being loaded. Monitoring consumption provides a better picture of the current situation and future needs.

This approach offers the opportunity to make informed choices for further expansion without having to make large investments immediately.

From supplier to sparring partner

During the collaboration, discussions also arose regarding other technical issues within the company. Integron now supplies pneumatic components, among other things, and we are looking at potential improvements to the packaging system. This involves utilizing specialist knowledge from multiple disciplines within the group.

According to Anton Grolleman, the added value lies primarily in the proactive thinking.

"Integron has short lines of communication, thinks along with us, and figures out exactly what is needed. We are extremely happy with the custom solutions."

Does this sound familiar?

Is compressed air consumption increasing within your organization? Are systems running at maximum capacity more often, or is there uncertainty about future growth?

Sometimes an improvement doesn't start with a new installation, but simply with gaining insight.
